While music and
storytelling are ancient human activities, the emergent
spoken word movement of the last few years is breathing
new life into both. Singer, poet and musician Andrew Whiteman
is a leading light of this tradition in Toronto, and this,
his first album is a strong contribution.
It squirms through
any specific boundaries of genre to encompass several
musical and storytelling styles; while it is at times
a rock album and a poetry album, it most often blurs the
lines between music and lyrics. Its variance in musical
style and lyrical presentation makes it a constantly interesting
and surprising listening experience. It is disturbing
and provocative; in the end, the wonder at what has just
passed makes only one response appropriate - just turn
the tape over, turn down the lights, sit back and listen
to it again. - James Keast (Exclaim! April 1995)
