People From
Earth are John Tielli
(vocals, guitar), Doug
Tielli (trombone, vocals), Casey
McGlynn (guitar,
vocals), Derek Allen
(bass guitar, vocals), and Pierce
Allen (drums, vocals). Emanating from
sundry regions of Southern Ontario (Tillsonburg, Rexdale,
and Toronto), they incorporate influences from Mary
Margaret O'Hara to the Pixies,
from Neil Young to the Beach
Boys. In the March 1994 issue of !*@#
(Exclaim) magazine, Steve Smith writes that People
From Earth's music "moves from bouncy rock to moments
of jazz and is heavy on vocals and weirdness," with
"chunky lead guitar" and "punchy trombone."
Humour, irony and introspection attend the dramatically
vocalized lyrics.
On March 21 1995
Green Sprouts Music and Dave's
Records of Guelph (DROG) published a compilation
CD, Nerdstock Vol.1,
recorded live at the Ultrasound
on July 2 1994. Six bands perform on the CD including
People From Earth. The May 1995 issue
of Chart magazine listed Nerdstock vol.1
at #13 on campus radio nationwide.
People From Earth's
17 song debut CD, "Growing up from the Ground,"
caters to an audience with diverse musical tastes. This
DROG release offers a sonic bouquet which
is in some passages manic, while in others, soothing.
Don't expect the predictable on this album; it is altogether
angry and friendly, happy and sad, goofy and serious.
The CD's title, "growing up from the ground,"
is a reflection of the universal experience of growing
up and dealing with life as a social animal.
Most of the songs
on "Growing up from the Ground"
were recorded at the Gas Station studio in Toronto between
September and December 1994. The recording was engineered
and CO-produced by Don Kerr, an accomplished
Toronto musician and producer. Three tracks were recorded
previously, in December 1993, at Reaction Studios in Toronto and CO-produced
by Martin Tielli. People From Earth co-produced
all tracks on the CD.
