Uncle Violet has been steadily
expanding a local fan base in support of Neurotica,
which is their first nationally released CD on Guelph's
DROG label. It is a guitar rock album
that attracts fans of Phish and the Grateful
Dead. Neurotica is reflective of Uncle Violet's
live sound, which combines a loose, improvisational feel
with unusual grooves and dark, thorny lyrics. The two
drummers forge dense polyrhythmic textures under Richard
Keelan's
melodic bass and the two lead guitars, which sometimes
trade off and sometimes clash noisily.
Neurotica was recorded over 10 months at
Glen Marshall's Catherine
North studio in Hamilton and is distributed
nationally by Outside Music. "Crushed
Velvet", the second track on the disc, has
been garnering top ten airplay at a number of campus radio
stations, and the band was awarded a VIDEOfact grant for
the "Hollow Sleep" (track 5)
video.
