Niagara is Melville's
long-awaited second release. Recorded between November '94
and January '95, these songs provide a soundscape of one
particular world view. A cooperative effort by the grinning
Gnome-like character from Guelph and his musical buddies
Tom Melville and Derek McKendrick,
much of the material derives from spontaneous, live improvisation.
Songs like "Grendel" portray the fate of an 8th
century street-kid and alleged bully. "She's Going
To Toronto" is a lament on the trauma of urban driving,
and the "Hardware Store" trilogy encapsulates
a twenty-four hour period of routine employment.
This album was co-produced by longtime associate
Wayne Stokes (Skydiggers, Plastercene Replicas) with mixing
assistance by Dave Clark. Guest performances by Charlie
Salmon (Plastercene Replicas, Wesley Crush),
(Skydiggers), Mike Ostler and Dave Teichroeb (Dissemblers),
Dave Clark (Rheostatics),Ian Pattison, members of Black Cabbage and the Bird Sisters, and many others.
