With a voice as deep
and mature as Tom Wilson or Nick Cave, it is shocking that
Aaron Riches has seen a mere 21 birthdays. Aaron's debut
recording includes material which is both modern and traditional,
ranging from passionate and haunting tracks having a rich
tapestry of instrumentation and vocals to traditional folk
tunes which are clear and thin with a maritime feel. He
has that magical talent of direct, heartfelt songwriting
and a voice that rumbles in sadness and comes across as
very real against acoustic guitar and cello notes.
A recent foray into
the history of folk music led Riches to put together this
album of stark, beautiful folk songs mixing traditional
numbers like "A Miner's Life is Like A Sailor's" with his own brand
of blues in pieces like the haunting "Unkind".
He assembled some of Guelph's finest talent as soon as he
was ready to record. The bed tracks for this album were
recorded by James Gordon and Lewis Melville, with additional
recording by Steve Clarkson. Both James and Lewis are also
credited with backing up Aaron instrumentally, as well as
several other of Guelph's finest and most talented musicians,
including various members of Black
Cabbage and Troll.
