The title says it all.
These two discs contain thirty-four new anti-war songs by thirty-four
different artists and over one hundred musicians. These compositions
were written and recorded in May of 1999 in response to NATO's decision
to bomb Yugoslavia.
It is not specifically about Kosovo, but rather refers to any situation
where the conditions of war exist.
The performers represent all facets of our musical world, from veteran
professionals like Josh Finlayson (Skydiggers), Jeff Bird (Cowboy
Junkies), to university professors who happen to be musicians (Hank
Davis, Alan Wildeman), to kids and people who have never set foot in a
recording studio.
The musical styles range from rock, folk, roots, bluegrass, jazz,
hip-hop, pipes and drums, and everything in between. No two songs are
alike, and each describes a different point of view, though all the
artists share a common desire to see an end to the madness of war and
violence.
This is a rough and ready album about peace, and a powerful and
immediate comment on the tragedy and pointlessness of war. The
songwriting and performances are excellent and heartfelt.
Remarkably the album was completed in its entirety in one month, from
when the idea was first suggested, through all stages of songwriting,
until the last song was recorded.
All of the costs were donated and time were donated. The proceeds
will
be distributed to various relief agencies around the world, as selected
by the artists themselves. This includes Doctors without Borders, and
the International Red Cross.
