Tired of sifting
through album after album of pop music to find something
new and interesting?
Here's an instrumental album that might curl your toes.
You Buy From Me is the latest release from
Lewis Melville, in cooperation with Lyn Vasey of Thailand,
and Dave Clark (formerly of the Rheostatics) and the Woodchoppers
Association. This album is one the first recorded releases
that represents an increasingly popular movement in new
music: Freestyle musical improvisation.
Over thirty of Canada's best freestyle
musicians, representing bands like Son, Guh, Needy Fingers,
Dinner is Ruined, Toronto Tabla Ensemble, Flashlight, Klave
y Kongo, Afons Fear Trio, Brodie West Group, Benji, Crowsfeet,
and Possum joined forces to create these 18 compositions.
The assembled orchestra includes a horn section,
multiple drummers and percussion, and a wide assortment
of conventional and exotic electric and acoustic instruments.
The music ranges from straight up jazz to
acoustic country blues, to ear crunching rock-and-blues
funk to spaced out psychedelic dreamscapes that include
live sampling and dub poetry subtexture. You Buy From Me
retains all the energy, spontaneity, and excitement
of the dynamic live performances of the original recording
session.
This album is a benefit album, and all the
proceeds go towards relief in Cambodia through the Red Cross,
and other relief organizations.
