Aaron Riches
Some will argue that in order to sing folk music convincingly, you must first undergo years of experience to fully appreciate the rich traditions of the genre. If you subscribe to such a theory, the notion of a twenty-one year old singer/songwriter creating a captivating modern folk record might seem absurd. Then again, people who subscribe to such a theory were shocked at the notion of DOA playing the Vancouver Folk Festival.

At age 21, Aaron Riches has been involved in Guelph's thriving music scene for the last eight years, promoting all-ages punk shows and playing drums in bands such as Burn 51 and Minnow.

In late 1994, he began performing sporadic solo acoustic shows, combining original material with cover songs borrowed from his newfound interest in twentieth century folk music. By the fall of 1995, he was ready to record his first album and assembled some of Guelph's finest talent, including Lewis Melville (Rheostatics, Skydiggers), James Gordon (Tamarack), Steve Clarkson and various members of Black Cabbage and Troll. The result of this collaboration of talent speaks for itself on Aaron Riches debut recording, "Over The Light Post". This album includes material which is both modern and traditional, ranging from passionate and haunting tracks having a rich tapestry of instrumentation and vocals to traditional folk tunes with a very real maritime feel.

Having recently completed a cross-Canada tour, Aaron Riches is a front runner in the vanguard of the modern folk movement. A disciple of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Fugazi and Ani difference, Aaron takes it all in and gives it all back plus more. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Stephen Fearing and David Gray will be proud to hang out in any CD collection next to Aaron Riches.
