John Tonin, Ontario Guitar Warz
2 champion, music teacher to most of the current
generation of guitar players in the Guelph area and considered
the city's "Wizard of the six-string" has, after
more than twenty years of playing, only just begun putting
his music on record. This acceptance that everything must
come in its own time no doubt comes from the fact that this
front man for a surf rock band is a meditation teacher.
John Tonin's life in music reads like a road trip of different
cultural landscapes. From the glitz of Las Vegas to the
grit of New York City (with 80's rock sensation Thor),
and from the attitude of the early 80's west coast music
scene to the simple joy of making music for children.
All signs pointed to this day for John Tonin. John's new
band, Six-String Johnny and the Jalapeņos, is
the musical destiny of a man who has spent his life making
music, touring, performing in various genres and making
friends along the way. The blending of all of these experiences
was then poured into a group of seasoned musicians to create
a full album of spicy surf tunes
and earthy turf songs. Six-String
Johnny and the Jalapeņos, is a cohesive
unit which combines all the different styles of John Tonin's
artistry. In it, you can hear the influences of his weaning
on the Beatles and years of Flamenco study.
Even though this project has been a long time in coming,
you won't hear John Tonin complain. This
project has grown naturally from a lifelong love of music
and a desire to make people happy.
