Riki's professional music career began
at Steeles Tavern on Yonge St. in Toronto in 1966
while attending Radio & Television Arts (R.T.A.) at
Ryerson. After co-founding and managing the Pornographic
Onion Coffee House in Ryerson's old library,
Riki took off with his guitar on a journey across Canada
and Alaska, ending up in Denver Colorado.
There in the fall of 1970 he was signed to Tumbleweed
Records. Tumbleweed Records was instrumental in inspiring
Riki Gee to write, record and release two albums under their
label, officially initiating the career of Riki Gee. Following
this, Riki traveled extensively in the south west and along
the west coast for the next twelve years, gaining invaluable
experience performing full time and developing his truly
original style.
Riki Gee returned to Guelph, Ontario
in the fall of 1985 to discover a new music scene emerging
on the horizon. 1986 found Riki diving in to his unexplored
Celtic roots with "Celtic Blue," who were pioneering
the development of what has become Celtic
rock, Canada-style. Celtic Blue disbanded in
1991 after releasing two recordings and traveling nonstop
in their legendary bus back and forth across the dominion.
Riki Gee checked out the local scene and discovered many
talented musicians/artists to collaborate with. One such
musician/artist was Jeff Bird, whom Riki teamed up
with and released a bizarre tape called "Dark
Monkey's Laughing," which gained a loyal cult
status and following.
After extensive gigging with Bill
Kinnear and numerous other artists for the next four
years, Riki has developed musical relationships with some
of the finest musicians this area has to offer. Some of
these musicians are:
Jeff
Bird - Cowboy Junkies, Tamarack
Randy Coryell - Alannah Myles, Tom Cochrane
Lewis Melville - Rheostatics,
Skydiggers
Tony Quarrington - Joe Hall, Willie P Bennett, CBC,
The Continental Drift
Riki has utilized the talents of
the musicians listed above, and more, in the creation of
his new CD, " Lonely City Cowboy". Riki now plays
with the Fisherman and just about anyone who
has room for a fiddler on stage. Cameo appearances on DROG
releases are: Aaron Riches-Rain, Vicki Fraser-Dynamite Opening,
Robert Atyeo- Heart Like A Rubber Ball, Dave Teichroeb-Dog
Tales and Jeff Bird CD's.
