Tannis Slimmon, Cate Friesen and Katherine Wheatley
Perform Together - At Last

Tannis Slimmon, Cate Friesen and Katherine Wheatley are all seasoned singer/songwriters who connected and became good friends through music years ago. They have performed as individuals and with different acts at folk festivals and concert series across Canada, but have never had the opportunity to work, the three of them, together. This November, Tannis, Cate and Katherine will be joining each other on stage for five shows in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Each artist is an outstanding songwriter and storyteller. Each has a beautiful voice and a warm rapport with their audiences. Combine those things with stellar harmonies plus the joy they'll have just being on stage together, and you've got yourself an unforgettable event. We hope you can be part of it.

Here's where they'll be:

Thursday, November 16, 8pm Solid Ground Arts and Coffee Room - Lorette, MB
Friday, November 17, 8pm House Concert - Steinbach, MB
Saturday, November 18, 8pm Ananda Arthouse - Forget, SK
Sunday, November 19, 2pm The Music Studio - Brandon, MB
Monday, November 20, 7:30 pm St. Alban's Anglican Church - Oak Lake, MB (this show is only Tannis Slimmon and Katherine Wheatley)

The Artist's Biographies:

CATE FRIESEN

Cate writes songs with an eye for the familiar and an ear for the unexpected turn of phrase and melody. Her voice is the instrument--clear and vibrant and flexible. And she tells a damn good story. It all adds up to intimate and lively performances.

Cate grew up in a Mennonite farming community in Southern Manitoba. She stitched together a rich and varied musical existence for years as a musician living in Toronto.
She's performed at festivals and clubs across Canada, solo, with her band, and with Katherine Wheatley and Susan Crowe. Inbetween shows she taught songwriting, sang in senior's homes and freelanced as a writer/broadcaster. Cate's music is available on three independent releases: Tightrope Waltz, Wayward and Joy's Disorder

A few years ago Cate moved back to her home province, to raise her family and work at CBC Radio. It's a rare thing these days for Cate to take the stage, and this is a great chance to see her perform in intimate venues, with two other seasoned singer-songwriters.

KATHERINE WHEATLEY

In a review of a show a in Thunder Bay, Hubert O'hearn writes "Katherine Wheatley gave an absolutely transcendent concert. She is able to take minor observations in life and find their soul. On stage...she exudes sheer kindness and love. Blessedly, refreshingly, Katherine Wheatley is a truly Canadian original".

Katherine has been a regular at folk festivals, concert series and clubs across Canada since the release of her first CD. As well as her solo career, she is a member of the Toronto band, Betty and the Bobs; she plays guitar in Wendell Ferguson’s trio “The Smoking Section”; and she teaches songwriting at schools in her new hometown of Guelph, ON. Her music has been used for documentaries, tv series and films. Among numerous radio and television appearances, Katherine has been a featured vocalist on Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe as well as a musical guest on Morningside, TVO's Studio Two, CBC Radio's Vicki Gabareau Show, CTV's Canada AM and Good Morning Canada. For five years, Katherine was the ambassador for the campaign to raise 6 million dollars for the new hospital in Parry Sound, ON. This summer, she ran a half marathon for Team Diabetes in Iceland.

According to the Toronto Star, Katherine Wheatley “turns pebbles of every day life into dreamy mountains of song”. Warren Footz from SEE Magazine in Edmonton wrote “As a listener, it's hard not to sit back, close your eyes and watch the movie play. And man, can this serene red head ever play guitar”.

TANNIS SLIMMON

Singer songwriter Tannis Slimmon's music career began with town hall, church and one-room school concerts in the farming community of Oak Lake, Mantoba. Since moving to Guelph, Ontario in the early '80's, she's been a key figure in the local music scene, as well as playing, recording and touring nationally and internationally. Her name has appeared on over 60 albums, as a vocalist and player in numerous bands or lending harmonies, which is one of her deepest passions.

“She's a terrific songwriter and a gifted performer. Her songwriting and her singing mirror her generous and gentle nature and both significantly account for the compelling nature of her work. I consider her one of the country's musical treasures”, says CBC’s Bill Stunt.

Tannis’s first solo CD, affectionately named Oak Lake, won a Porcupine Award for 'Steve's Favourite Album of the Year’. The citation reads: "This independent release by veteran performer Tannis Slimmon (Bird Sisters, Benji) was long overdue. However, if Tannis had done this before now, it would have probably suffered being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As it is, the world is ready for Oak Lake now. She has assembled an impressive cast of players who she loves, and they love her, and it all shows on this incredibly enjoyable album. The songs are good, solid pop songs, delivered with beautiful production. How can you tell when an album is really good? Because when it finishes you think, that can't be it! Is it over already. Better put it on again. And that probably says more for this project than anything else I can add. It's just really good stuff that you can't get enough of. "
