Uncle Violet was first
assembled in 1991 by Mike
Daley (guitar and voice), a former member
of the Killjoys, and Isabella Daley
to perform their collaborative original music. The band,
originally comprised of Shelley Woods on
bass and Dan Holowachuk on drums along
with Daley, began to develop their sound at small club dates
around Hamilton.
With Woods' departure to join the Killjoys,
Richard Keelan (bass) and Steve
Sinnicks (drums) were added to the lineup, which
now enjoyed a long-running house gig at the Ragin'
Cajun in Hamilton. Les Cooper
(guitar) and Tone Valcic (drums, percussion)
replaced Holowachuk in late 1995, completing the lineup.
In addition to playing shows around Southern Ontario, Uncle
Violet played to over 100,000 people at the Hamilton Day
of Action in February 1996. Uncle Violet has been steadily
expanding a local fan base in support of Neurotica, their first nationally
released CD on Guelph's DROG label.
Uncle Violet also appears on the Hamilton Music
Scene '96 CD, DROG's Truck Songs compilation
and an upcoming release, the BMG National College Radio
Conference compilation .
The band is currently recording tracks for their new LP
(upgraded from the originally planned EP) at Hamilton's
Grant Avenue Studios.
Here's what some critics have to say about Uncle Violet's
album Neurotica:

and often haunting...definitely satisfies...memorable"
EYE magazine: "supremely
talented...the single best recording I've heard come out
of my neck of the woods in a long time"
EXCLAIM magazine: "quite
